Ignition #4 – rookie tournament

The QuakeWorld rookie tournament Ignition has once again opened its doors. The goal of the Ignition tournament is to introduce new players to this game under fun and fair, yet competitive conditions.

The tournament format is 1on1 deathmatch in a double-elimination bracket playoff and the matches will be played on the maps Aerowalk, ZTNDM3, VDM3V3, Hate and Skull in best of three maps series. The tournament will last between 7th November and 20th December 2011 with matches scheduled in specific weeks – you agree with your opponent on when to play – rather than on a set date to allow for flexibility for players.

You can get started with QuakeWorld today by downloading nQuake which is a quick-starter pack that includes everything you need to play QuakeWorld and participate in this tournament. The nQuake pack is based off of the Quake shareware version and thus only includes the maps from the first episode and custom maps. If one wants to play the classic DM maps, then the pak1.pak that can be found on your original Quake CD is required.

I hope to see many rookies signed up, as it’s yours truly who manages the whole thing. Bear in mind though that by rookies we really mean rookies – not bad players according to the QuakeWorld standard. This is to ensure the most enjoyable experience for potential future QuakeWorld players!

Duelmania is reloaded

The legendary duel tournament by the name of Duelmania has once again opened its doors for another season. The last time we saw a Duelmania tournament was back in 2006 but now the administrators have teamed up with the Ownage duel tournament team to ensure enough chefs for the cooking.

The sign up period is currently active and will close on the 18th of September. The maps used in the tournament will be the traditional five duel maps: DM2, DM4, DM6, ZTNDM3 and Aerowalk.

Currently there are 42 players signed up, including renowned names like Rikoll, Bps, Locktar and Kingpin.

Check out the Duelmania website!

Australian tournament: ozQuake

A new initiative from down under has come forward under the name ozQuake which is a 1on1 tournament that aims at reviving the Australian scene again.
The site is driven by xiLe and has been awarded its very own forum on the main QuakeWorld hub, QuakeWorld.nu, to hopefully get some long lasting activity going.

10 top rock songs for QW

As i have always enjoyed hopping onto the XS4ALL FFA server, fragging it up with loud rock’n'roll music pumping out of the headphones while shredding the enemies to bits with a quadded super nail gun, i thought i’d share a list with the songs that are very good at getting a player into the groove.

Clawfinger playing on a concert in 2009

10. Clawfinger – Biggest & The Best

The classic from the Swedish band Clawfingers, founded 1989 in Stockholm, Sweden. The band itself plays industrial rap metal and their album “Clawfinger” from 1997 contained quite a few good tunes, and we all know which one was the biggest and the best of them!

The song itself plays on your ego when used in conjunction with QuakeWorld of course, combine this song with Quad and you’re all of a sudden invincible! The band definitely deserves to be in the list as one of the members played (plays?) Quake if i remember correctly.

9. Bonafide – Dirt Bound

Bonafide is quite a young Swedish band, formed in 2006, who released their debut album “Bonafide” in October 2007 featuring the quite cocky track “Dirt Bound”. The sound is similar to AC/DC, with focus on guitar riffs, and fits well into the Quake surroundings.

8. Nickelback – Burn It To The Ground

The well known Nickelback, who for some may feel so mainstream it almost feel taboo to mention him on a list of rock songs. “Burn It To The Ground” is an aggressive piece of music which will push all the right buttons on that cramped DM4 FFA.

7. Nomy – Cocaine

Nomy is a phenomenon who started out making slightly unserious music, just to get his real breakthrough by interacting via social medias like Facebook, uploading his songs to Youtube and also later on getting his music published on the popular Swedish streaming service Spotify. This year he was nominated for a “Grammis” in Sweden, a prestigious music award. “Cocaine” was his first real hit which has a good flow to it.

6. W.A.S.P. – Wild Child

The band of black headlines. A very controversial metal band due to their habit of throwing raw meat at the audience during their concerts back in the days. Noone knows for sure what the name stands for, but the Swedish television used to like calling them “We Are Satan’s People” when confronting their fans regarding whether this was “dangerous music” or not. One thing is for sure though, when used in conjunction with QuakeWorld, this track will make you fly over the map!

5. D-A-D – Sleeping My Day Away

D-A-D is a Danish rock band that was known as “Disneyland After Dark”  until Walt Disney himself got to know about the use of the name. They started out in the early 1980s and another hit they had was “Laugh and a half”. That’s a slower tune though, while this is as much fast paced glam rock as it gets.

4. Metallica – Sad But True

And so finally Metallica makes it onto the list – one of the most renowned bands in the history of rock’n'roll. “Sad But True” was released on the album “Metallica”, released in 1991.

Bon Scott playing in Grenoble, December 1979

3. AC/DC – T.N.T.

“T.N.T” is a real classic by the Australian hard rock band AC/DC with guitar prodigy Angus Young and Brian Johnson as the front figures nowadays.

The album “T.N.T”, which featured the song with the same name, was released as early as 1975 and thus has Bon Scott on lead vocals – one of the greatest front men of all times. Bon Scott died in 1980 due to alcohol poisoning after a night of heavy drinking.

The heavy drinking is nothing unusual for rock bands and in the AC/DC biography there are also stories about Angus Young jumping down from the stage, taking on the audience in wild fist fights in the cases where he was provoked, delivering some T.N.T. as response.

2. Metallica – Seek & Destroy

A song about feeling the urge to kill, can it be any more fitting than this when jumping onto the server looking to climb on top of the frag chart? A brilliant solo intro and a heavy, aggressive sound makes this one a top contender.

1. AC/DC – Thunderstruck

The familiar intro to this song makes it a tune that’s very easy to recognise. It’s a youthful party song with one of the coolest music videos ever that takes place in something that looks like a prison and starts out with a zoom-in on Angus’ guitar when he’s doing the intro. This is what you play when you’re giving the enemies a hard time with the thunderbolt and they get THUNDERSTRUCK!

Have any more additions that should be on the list? Let us know in the comments!

Ogre’s Keep

The mapper Muff1n has been really busy the last few months, churning out quality maps from his factory at a quite impressive pace. Previously there have been maps suited for 1on1, 2on2 and even the odd CTF map to try out after announcements made on the QuakeWorld.nu mapping forum.

The anticipation he’s built up from the quality work he’s done has made people bugging him about trying out making a 4on4 map, and so he did. The map is called Ogre’s Keep and borrows some elements from all the big three maps (i.e. DM2, DM3 and E1M2) in an attempt to make it a success.

At the time i’m writing this, the map is in beta stage and beta testing is currently carried out with help from volunteers. There have already been some modifications to the map and a second beta version of it is available. I suggest you check out the QuakeWorld.nu forum thread for Ogre’s Keep as this might be a keeper. It would indeed be interesting to see how it plays in a custom map tournament further on this year.

Summer activity

The summer is approaching and many people are coming up with other things to do than playing our favourite game QuakeWorld. Still, there are quite a few brave souls and teams left wreaking havoc and below you can see what tournaments and other activities that you can enter during the summer. The list will be completed as new things pops up.

Of course one should take the time off during the summer and recharge the batteries, but it might still be a good idea to at least maintain the shape somewhat and get a head start in time for season start in autumn.
