For those of you who are big fans of the old legends, here comes an interesting piece of news. I accidentally stumbled upon a bunch of uploaded demos on Challenge-TV which had Griffin challenging the norwegian Rikoll for some DM4 action.
Griffin always was a highly skilled player with perhaps a bit of a peak in 2004 when he won both the 1on1 tournament on QHLAN and also the 2on2 with his radar partner MrLame from “Griffin’s tappra gossar” (eng: Griffin’s brave boys).
In recent years both he and his nemesis, Dag, have been absent from the QuakeWorld servers. Perhaps it’s time for a serious comeback in time for next QHLAN?
Naughty Brickworks - something for next custom map tournament?
Zaka, the author of well renowned maps like Skull, Schloss and Dad’s Playground, has just finished and released what might be yet another masterpiece of mapping. The map goes by the name “Naughty Brickworks” (you’ll understand if you look at the screenshots…) and is made to be enjoyed under 4on4 circumstances.
There are a couple of screenshots for your viewing pleasure and the map also comes with 24-bit textures.
For those of you who have ever attempted to finish the singleplayer part of Quake, here comes some inspiration from the Quake done quick team. It’s an incredibly quick and optimized run through all the Quake singleplayer levels which shows some amazing skills (and dedication) from the speedrunners.
Note that the only aid they used was a hack that made it possible to replay certain levels on command with the equipment/health/armour they finished the previous level with, i.e. the whole run is not done in one go.
The start date for EQL:Pro has now been revealed in a comment post by one of the admins. The start of the league will be on the 9th of January and the tournament will be played with two groups of four teams in each. There will be one or two games per sunday for the viewers to enjoy.
How many of the group teams that goes to playoff has not been clearly stated i think, but a good guess is the top two teams from each group go straight to semifinals.
The registration phase for the second season of the 1on1 tournament by the name of “Showdown” has opened. As you may remember, this is the tournament that started during 2010 when it stood clear that no new season of Duelmania nor Ownage was going to take place.
There really is not much more information than that the registration is open – Refragged has searched the website for information on when the tournament actually starts, without success.
Another year of QuakeWorld action is soon over and it’s now time to spend time with friends and relatives to recharge your batteries in time for next year. Hopefully the next year holds a bright future for this special game and community of ours.
I wish you all a merry christmas and a very happy new year!

Update: The last spot in EQL:Pro goes to Quakeklan after having beaten DC in two straight maps:

The lottery has taken place and the groups for the EQL: Pro qualifiers have been announced. Despite the totally random lottery the groups seems reasonable and doesn’t make for any particularly interesting disaster discussion topic.

As written in previous posts; the top two teams in each group goes through while the two teams ending up at third place will play an additional match for the last spot in the EQL: Pro league.
The registration for the EQL: Pro qualifiers officially closed earlier today and the EQL organization has now revealed what teams will be competing for the remaining five spots in this prestigious league. For the qualifiers, starting at 18:00CET tomorrow, we will see some expected teams along with a Slackers 2 comeback and a finnish mix team with a lot of sisu in it.
Some people have raised concerns regarding the decision to have these qualifiers and league run during Christmas times as people tend to go away on holiday. The list of qualifying teams will for sure generate a few interesting matchups.
These teams will be split into two groups of three teams each. The top two in each group will go through and the two third place finishers will have to battle it out in a final decisive game for the last spot in the EQL: Pro league.
In addition to the teams battling it out for the remaining five spots there will also be Suddendeath, Fusion and Slackers first team who are already qualified.
